<p>For the next six month I will be a Visiting Professor at <a href="https://www.columbia.edu">Columbia</a>, hosted by <a href="https://www.me.columbia.edu/faculty/gerard-ateshian">Gerard Ateshian</a> as well as <a href="https://www.me.columbia.edu/faculty/kristin-myers">Kristin Myers</a> and <a href="https://www.me.columbia.edu/adrian-buganza-tepole">Adrian Buganza Tepole</a> through the <a href="https://alliance.columbia.edu">Alliance Program</a>. I will be giving introductory seminars in various group meetings through January, and a full seminar at the Mechanical Engineering Department in February. I will also take part in various teaching activities (notably Gerard Ateshian’s “Mixture theories for biological tissues” class), as well as organize dissemination events with local schools. This is such a perfect opportunity to share our recent results, learn new topics, and make new connections—very much looking forward to it!</p>

<p>It is an extension of our recent paper [<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijsolstr.2025.113354">Manoochehrtayebi, Bel-Brunon &amp; Genet (2025). Finite strain micro-poro-mechanics: Formulation and compared analysis with macro-poro-mechanics. International Journal of Solids and Structures, 317, 113354.</a>], where we specify the micro-model for the lung parenchyma, including (strain- and history-dependent) surface tension, and identifying material parameters based on experimental data from the literature.</p>

This week (06/11) I will give a seminar (Toward pulmonary digital twins: recent efforts in motion tracking using mechanical regularization, lung poromechanical modeling and estimation, model reduction using finite element neural networks) at the <a href="https://www.fcien.edu.uy">Facultad de Ciencias</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.fing.edu.uy">Facultad de Ingeniería</a>, and later this month (20/11) I will give a general audience seminar (Mechanics of the heart and lungs—a tale of modeling, computing and learning) at the University. Very much looking forward to it!</p>

<p>For the next two weeks I will be a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center in Dallas, invited by <a href="https://profiles.utsouthwestern.edu/profile/195959/radomir-chabiniok.html">Radomir Chabiniok</a> and <a href="https://utswmed.org/doctors/mohammad-hussain">Tarique Hussain</a>. This week I will give seminars at the Heart Center (Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery Divisions) and Pulmonary &amp; Critical Care Medicine (Internal Medicine Department), and next week I will attend <a href="https://fimh2025.sciencesconf.org">the 13th Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart (FIMH) Conference</a>. It will also be an occasion to visit colleagues at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) and Oden Institute for Computational Mechanics, notably <a href="https://www.bme.utexas.edu/people/faculty-directory/bush">Adam Bush</a>, <a href="https://www.ae.utexas.edu/people/faculty/faculty-directory/landis">Chad Landis</a> and <a href="https://oden.utexas.edu/people/directory/Michael-Sacks">Michael Sacks</a>. <p>Today I gave a seminar at the School of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Glasgow, entitled “Toward pulmonary digital twins: recent efforts in motion tracking using mechanical regularization, lung poromechanical modeling and estimation, model reduction using finite element neural networks”. I had the chance to meet many people from the <a href="https://www.softmech.org">SofTMech “Mathematics for Healthcare” Center</a> (notably Profs. <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/mathematicsstatistics/staff/nicholashill">Nicholas Hill</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/mathematicsstatistics/staff/haogao">Hao Gao</a> and some of their students), and learn about the excellent work they are doing, notably on cardiac perfusion modeling and simulation, which could very well be useful for our lung perfusion modeling efforts.</p>

<p>Today was the kick off meeting of the FHU (<em>Fédération Hospitalo-Universitaire</em>, i.e., University Hospital Federation) André Cournand (French-American physician and physiologist, Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1956 for the development of cardiac catheterization) “Transforming Pulmonary Vascular Medicine”.</p>

<p>The FHU, lead by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-montani-859183119">David Montani</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/laurent-savale-594754275">Laurent Savale</a>, is built upon the world-leading <a href="http://www.u999.universite-paris-saclay.fr">Paris-Saclay University/INSERM/APHP “Pulmonary hypertension: Pathophysiology and therapeutic innovation” research unit</a> lead by Marc Humbert, and aims at establishing “a robust network of clinical teams, basic and translational multidisciplinary research laboratories, engineering teams and platforms to confront emerging challenges in the field of pulmonary vascular diseases”.</p>

<p>As a co-leader of the “Biomarkers and Modeling Pulmonary Vascular Diseases” work package of the FHU, I gave a short presentation on our current efforts on lung mechanical modeling, and our plan for modeling pulmonary circulation, notably in the context of <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/haotian-xiao-a00771195">Haotian Xiao</a>’s PhD. The other presentations were all super impressive, and I am looking forward to see this federation in action!</p>

  <title>New paper on direct model parameter identification</title>

<p>Did you ever dream of identifying model parameters from images without running the model itself? This is possible!</p>
<p>Alice Peyraut and I just published a paper in <a href="https://comptes-rendus.academie-sciences.fr/mecanique"><em>Comptes Rendus Mécanique</em></a>, where we use the finite strain formulation of the equilibrium gap principle (introduced in [<a href="https://doi.org/10.5802/crmeca.228">Genet, 2024, C. R. Mécanique</a>], cf.&nbsp;<a href="../../2024/2024-02-07 - new-paper-on-mechanical-regularization-for-motion-tracking">dedicated post</a>) to perform direct (i.e., without evaluating the model itself) estimation of model (material and/or loading) parameters from full field measurements. The method is <em>a priori</em> highly sensitive to noise, but we showed that using the equilibrium gap as regularizer for motion tracking allows to extract displacement fields from dynamic images that are robust enough to be used for direct parameter estimation.
